We are in the same boat in many ways as Seminole Heights when it comes to a lack of businesses, particularly - good places to eat.
I think Cappy's has been a fantastic addition to Seminole Heights, and it's very conveniently located for us in Tampa Heights, too. This business could help that whole Florida Ave. corridor from MLK to Hillsborough.

Thai Corner in the Trib
Ok, so it's not in Tampa Heights, I know, but it's darn close. This place deserves more night business, so check it out.
They have excellent Tom Ka soup, as well as the cucumber salad. The crab rangoon has a curry thing going on it it, and they are also delicious. Try the Hor Mok, soft-shell crab in green curry (my favorite), the eggplant in peanut sauce or the spicy scallops if you'd like to get something away from the whole Pad Thai/standard curry continuum. All good stuff.

Represent, Tampa Heights!
You may know I also run Jobsite Theater, and we're the resident theater company at TBPAC. We could really use some support this weekend as we have two shows running. There's the final two performances of All the Great Books (abridged) - which I am in - Sat. at 10p and Sun. at 7p. There's also 4 showings of This is How it Goes. Thu. - Sat. at 8p and Sun. at 4p.
In most critical need of support is the performance of TIHIG tonight, and the two shows on Sunday. Go figure, we're struggling against the SuperBowl.
Both shows are exceptional and have gotten high praise from both critics and regular patrons. Both shows have also suffered a lack of press due to Gasparilla, the run to the SuperBowl and other big events here from the monster truck pull to Spamalot. New Bleu Acier show
Bleu Acier is proud to open the winter season with CONTROLLED BURN, a solo exhibition of drawings and video by collaborative artists Robyn Voshardt / Sven Humphrey, formerly of Florida and now based in New York. In late 2005, the artists were awarded a Caldera Artist Residency in Oregon, where they made many of the works on view.
Controlled Burn refers to the forestry practice of eliminating undergrowth and invasive species, with the goal of mitigating disastrous fires in the future. The artists used this idea as a point of departure, inspired by a two week stay in a mountainside area decimated by a burn gone way out of control. The resulting large drawings use the the most basic materials derived from trees – paper and carbon-based ink – and the artists' own breath instead of a brush to make the mark.

This series continues to influence Voshardt/Humphrey's current projects that explore issues of control and intent on an environmental and personal scale: such as controlled growth in urban planning, and the surrender of control over to chance in their selection of materials and process for making art. Also on view in the Project Room is their video projection entitled When I Look Up, I Fall Down, from footage gathered on location in an old-growth forest, with audio composed by the artists. Seen from a disorienting spin, the lush tree canopy no longer offers a sense of shelter, but creates a vortex suggestive of a larger ecological and personal conundrum.
Voshardt/Humphrey have been included in numerous museum exhibitions on the west coast of Florida and the Boston area. Their work is in the permanent collections of the John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Tampa Museum of Art, Gulf Coast Museum of Art, and Pinellas County Arts Council. In 2006 they were also awarded a Florida Individual Artist Grant and participated in the Bridge and Pool Art Fairs in Miami, as well as Perpetual Art Machine at CinemaScope New York and Miami.
The artists will be present for the opening reception.

Tampa Heights Food News
I don't have as much exciting information to post about Ye Olde Hoode, not like the Seminole Heights blog anyway.
Oh well, I'm trying. That counts for something, right?
So, my only news recently comes in the way of food. Bear with me.
I ate at Grass Root Organic (well, I got takeout anyway) for the first time earlier this week. I have to admit, I was extraordinarily impressed. I was a bit bummed they were out of the makings for Miso Soup and the Burrito made with a sunflower seed refried bean-like substance. I guess that's one of the pitfalls with an organic place - if you're out of stuff or waiting on seeds to sprout etc, you're at the mercy of availability.
I did have a lovely flatbread/hummus item called a Marakesh and a ramen soup. Both were quite good. I was particularly impressed with how little they feared garlic. the Marakesh was extremely fresh and tasty. I'd like to go back and eat in, everyone there was very friendly. they even let me put out cards for the show.
I also note the transition is basically complete over at the old House of Soul to it's new owner/name My House. I did have the food once since the change and I noted no real difference in quality. Good stuff.
Speaking of BBQ - I've noted Oceanic Grocery is getting a lot more variety in the meat case. It used to be all you saw were ducks, roast pork, cuttlefish and various parts I wouldn't really consider food (somebody else apparently does, so to each his own). Lately I've been seeing a lot of bbq chicken legs quarters and rib slabs - both done in that sorta 5-spice bbq style - and they're all delicious. I picked up some of both of those today as well as some supremely garlicy greens.
I got no real other news ... oh, except does anyone else notice it seems that the YMCA on Palm and Florida is constantly replacing a chunk of that iron fence because someone manages to plow into it at least once a month? That's gotta be costly to keep replacing ...

Tampa Heights in 2007
So, fellow Heightsians, what would you like to realistically see happen in our 'hood this new year?
Roads, blocks, houses, stores, trails, sidewalks, services - you name it!
Let's get the conversation going!
For one, I'd love to see that corridor on Columbus between Tampa and Florida get some new life in it. A grocery store or farmers/fresh market. The guys selling watermelons and mangos in the old lot of the Blue Ribbon doesn't count! Or is merely a start ...
I'd also like to see a better neighborhood watch system, which would I hope lead to less shed and car break-ins.

Winter Wonderlands
I drive past this house on the corner of Arlington and Indiana every day. It's a great-looking house, and I always laugh at the pack of chihuahuas I usually see in the backyard on my way home.
Since I've lived in Tampa Heights, these guys go BUCK WILD around Christmas. The house sits on a double lot and it's covered - tastefully - with all the symbols of the season. I'm always impressed the put lights on the roof and around every edge with it being a two-story house. I don't know when they do it, either, it just seems to magically appear.
Drive by after dark if you get the chance. It's a spectacle.
Any other great neighborhood light displays we should know about?

Gallery closing: ENTRE CHIEN ET LOUP

Saturday December 2, 2006 from 1 -5 PM we will have the closing for the show Entre Chien et Loup. We will celebrate the Gallery going to Miami for the Bridge Art Fair during Miami Basel (www.bridgeartfair.com) by offering special holiday prices.
Also there will be a sneak preview in the studio of Dominique Labauvie's new sculpture "From the Earth to the Moon" made especially for Art Complement at the Bridge Art Fair.
Bleu Acier is proud to open this season with ENTRE CHIEN ET LOUP, a group exhibition which brings together established, mid-career and emerging artists from Europe and the United States to explore different processes and propositions within contemporary painting.
Entre Chien et Loup is a French idiom - which in the literal sense means the difference between the dog and the wolf - and figuratively illustrates the precise moment of the day we call twilight when the sun has just set and the light is non-definitive. Forms, colors and shapes all melt together and the horizon presents new spatial perceptions. The emotional and intellectual limits between the familiar and the unknown are re-defined and the spectator’s visual intelligence is brought to another level. Entre Chien et Loup investigates contemporary artistic thinking and language through the act of painting.
