Anyone been to Ella's yet? The Independent? Care to tell us about your experience? Send it in!
I'm curious about The Independent and meant to go in there myself on Friday night, but the storm stopped me. The only thing I seem to hear with frequency is that it's expensive. Can anyone comment?

The Independent - still working out some of the kinks. Most beers are in the $5-7. price range. Mostly European brews, the Lion Stout is great ($7 for a pint) but it gets you there fast (8% Alcohol). No TV's so bring your conversation. No food, so make sure you eat. Music is good, and a reflection of the staff (bartenders bring in their own iPods)
ReplyDeleteElla's - Been there once on a busy Friday night. My Salmon tacos were delicious and the rest of my party seemed to enjoy their meal also. I Definitely plan on making it back soon. Beer is not Ella's specialty, but they have a couple of good options available.
Ella's is a great addition to the neighborhood. Good food with options for just about any budget. Anyplace you can get a 2.50 pbr tall boy and some excellent black bean hummus is good for me. Also would recommend the Sunday brunch, the funky monkey waffle slathered in nutella and bananas was good, though maybe a little over the top, and you can't go wrong with some simple eggs bacon and toast.
ReplyDeleteThanks, H-U and Anon. I've now since been to both spots a few times.
ReplyDeleteI love Ella's and can't wait to try their BBQ brunch. So far I can say the Fat Jap app is killer, full of meaty-cheesy deliciousness. The Whole Hog pizza is exactly as the name implies, as is The Ugly burger - two giant patties with bacon and grilled onions, peppers and mushrooms smothering it. The burgers come with sweet potato fries or sliced fried zucchini. I would say I don't think anyone could eat a whole one, but a friend of mine did. On the lighter side I really enjoyed the Southern Sweet Pea salad.
The Independent is another good spot, and a needed addition to the hood. Initially I thought it was a little expensive, compared to New World or TBBC, but it's not really when you consider the quality (and typically the ABV) of the beer you're getting. You can do some damage to your wallet there, don't get me wrong, you won't find a beer there under $5 I think. If I had to knock the place at all, it would be the inconsistency of having a stout or porter on tap at all times. The focus is clearly on eastern Europe, mostly Belgian and German. The selection is insane! The only complaint about the location would be the proximity to an often busy Florida Avenue. I think some of that road noise could be eliminated with more foliage out front.
Both places are really lovely in design and decor. We're glad to have these places! Certainly makes the neighborhood better, and it's nice to not always have to drive to Ybor!
Intresting blog keep it up....!
